Desk manager

The manager who structures deals, sets what can move in a negotiation and supports the floor through the close.

The desk manager builds the numbers. They decide how a deal is presented, what the trade will be allowed, which term and structure gets shown first, and how much room exists at each stage. They also take turn overs, approve exceptions and keep the floor moving on a busy Saturday.

Because the desk sees every deal, the role tends to accumulate informal authority over how the store sells. A store’s habits usually reflect what the desk rewards, whatever the training manual says, which makes the desk the right place to start when a practice needs to change.

Why it matters for a sales manager

The desk is where phone promises get tested. A payment quoted loosely on a call, a trade number guessed at over text, an out-the-door figure that left out fees: all of it arrives at the desk as a problem to solve in front of the customer. Getting the desk manager involved in what the phone team may say prevents most of it.
