Be-back

A customer who leaves without buying and later returns to the dealership, either on their own or because follow-up brought them in.

A be-back is a returning shopper. The old floor saying that be-backs never come back describes stores without a follow-up process, not customer behavior. A meaningful share of buyers visit more than once before they purchase, and many of those returns are produced by a phone call or a text rather than by chance.

A managed be-back looks like an appointment, because someone asked the customer to come back at a specific time for a specific reason.

Why it matters for a sales manager

How a store treats be-backs reveals whether its follow-up is real. If returning customers arrive unannounced and get handed to whoever is next up, the original salesperson had no process. If they arrive at a set time and ask for someone by name, the follow-up worked.
