Up

A sales opportunity, and by extension the customer attached to it: a walk-in up, a phone up or an internet up.

An up is a chance to sell a vehicle. The term comes from the rotation on the floor, where salespeople take turns being up next to greet whoever arrives. It has since expanded to cover every channel, so stores talk about phone ups, internet ups and be-back ups alongside walk-in ups.

Logging ups accurately is the foundation of every conversion measure in the store, and it is also where most reporting quietly breaks down.

Why it matters for a sales manager

Unlogged ups make good salespeople look great and make the store look worse than it is, because closing ratios are calculated against whatever got written down. If a manager cannot trust the up count, they cannot trust any ratio built on top of it.
