Opt-out keywords
Words a message recipient uses to stop future contact, alongside other clear requests that may express the same choice.
Use this definition in team training or when clarifying a sales note.
Definition
Opt-out keywords are machine-recognized replies such as STOP that a sending system uses to suppress later messages. A keyword list is a processing aid, not the full meaning of a customer’s request.
47 CFR 64.1200(a)(10) recognizes specified reply words and also a different reply that a reasonable person would understand as revoking consent for covered calls or texts. Check the current rule’s scope and exceptions with counsel. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why it matters
A suppression process needs a route for ordinary language as well as exact matches. Test a synthetic reply such as “please stop contacting me,” and confirm that queued contact is handled correctly. This differs from a do-not-call list, which is a record consulted before contact, rather than the customer’s incoming request.
