Dealer principal

The owner or controlling operator of a dealership, named on the franchise agreement with the manufacturer.

The dealer principal is the person the manufacturer holds accountable for the franchise. They own or control the business, sign the franchise agreement and carry final responsibility for how the store is run.

Some dealer principals operate a single rooftop hands on. Others own a group and delegate daily operations to general managers at each location.

Why it matters for a sales manager

Decisions that cross departments, such as recording policy, vendor contracts or how customer data is handled, usually need the dealer principal’s sign-off. Anything with legal or compliance weight belongs at that level rather than being settled informally inside one department.
