CPO (certified pre-owned)

A used vehicle sold under a manufacturer program that adds an inspection and extended factory-backed coverage.

Certified pre-owned vehicles are used units that meet a manufacturer’s eligibility rules, pass a defined inspection and carry additional factory-backed warranty coverage. Eligibility criteria, inspection standards and coverage terms differ by manufacturer.

Dealer certified programs are a separate thing, backed by the store or a third party rather than by the manufacturer, and the distinction matters to a shopper comparing listings.

Why it matters for a sales manager

Certification is a concrete answer to a nervous used-car buyer on the phone, and it gives a rep something specific to invite them in for: the inspection report and the coverage documents in front of them, which is a better reason to visit than a general invitation.
