No follow-up plan.
A conversation with real interest ends with no next contact: no date, no task and nothing the customer was told to expect.
"Okay, well, you have my number if anything changes."
What it sounds like. Synthetic example. Why it matters
Leads rarely die during the conversation. They die in the gap afterward, when the next move was left to the customer. Handing the initiative over feels respectful and is really an unstaffed hope, and it hides inside a store that looks busy, because everyone is working new leads while yesterday's warm ones cool off untouched. A pipeline is only as real as the dated next steps inside it.
What to do next
Require a dated next step before the rep moves to the next lead: a time, a channel and a reason to make contact that is worth the customer's attention. Say the plan out loud to the customer so they expect it, then put it in the CRM the same way. A plan the customer heard beats a task only the system knows about.
How to coach it
Run one one-on-one entirely on endings. Play the last twenty seconds of three conversations and ask what happens next for each one. When the answer is nothing, write the next step together and have the rep say it as they would to the customer, because the plan has to be speakable, not just enterable.

Questions about this signal
What is a good next step when the customer is not ready?
A specific date with a reason to make contact, such as new arrivals in their budget or the appraisal window on their trade. Checking in is not a reason.
Is every conversation supposed to have a plan?
Every conversation with a potential buyer. Service calls, vendors and wrong numbers are not opportunities and should not clutter the list.
Does this replace CRM tasks?
No. It points to conversations where no next step was set, so the tasks in your CRM can be built from what was actually said.
